Playing arm candy, Tom Cruise escorted his wife, Katie Holmes to the premiere of Overture Films’ Mad Money held at Mann Village Theater in Westwood, California. The couple did their frisky newlywed show on the red carpet, as per most of their recent appearances. Holmes said to People.com, “Having [20-month-old daughter] Suri and Tom [on set] was wonderful…You think you love to do something and then you have the people you love there. It makes it a billion times better and you didn’t realize you were missing that before. It’s like ‘Oh my God, life can be this good.’”  What do you think their secret is? Discuss.

Simmer Down, Pundits…

Media outlets everywhere were proclaiming the End of Tom Cruise’s Career this morning after the release of weekend box office for his latest flick (and the first under the re-vamped United Artists) Lions for Lambs. It tanked with a paltry $6.7 million. But did anyone seriously think that a talky Robert Redford drama about social responsibility was going to rake in Mission: Impossible-style cash, allowing Redford to hop around on a bed of money a la Indecent Proposal? One must only look to the recent box office failures of high-profile flicks like Rendition and In the Valley of Elah to realize that Lions for Lambs was more or less doomed from the get-go. American audiences are rejecting topical dramas this season. In any case, when Cruise returns to blockbuster territory next year with Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie, a bounce-back is practically guaranteed.

United Artists And Its #1 Lion

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes cut a typically blissful pose at the Washington, D.C. premiere of Cruise’s new film Lions for Lambs, a political thriller directed by Robert Redford and co-starring Meryl Streep, Michael Pena, and Derek Luke. Industry watchdogs have their eyes firmly trained on Lions for Lambs, which opens November 9th and is the first film from the re-minted United Artists. Cruise and his longtime producing partner Paula Wagner nabbed the reigns of the comatose studio with the guidance and blessing of MGM in 2006. With a reported production budget of just $35 million, this smart, dialogue-heavy topical thriller is the perfect vehicle for a re-launch. Some may feel a bit of déjà vu – DreamWorks SKG launched with The Peacemaker, an action-packed terrorism thriller starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman, way back in the simpler days of 1997.
