Partners in crime, Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn chummed up at the 2009 Vanity Fair Oscar party hosted by Graydon Carter at the Sunset Tower Hotel on February 22, 2009.  Twenty Nine years earlier, Hollywood outlaws Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper pal around at an Oscar after-party.

Cannes Man

Sean Penn will be heading the jury of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. In the words of Paris, that’s hot. Not quite as hot and sexy and wild as 2006 – Wong Kar-Wai did the deed – but pretty dang hot nonetheless.

Speaking of Cannes, I hope everyone sees the 2007 Palme d’Or winner “4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days” when it’s released in the States (limited) on January 25. In the words of me, it’s downright virtuosic!

Sean Penn’s beautiful, moving, occasionally corny “Into the Wild” received a boost this week with the announcement of the Critics Choice Award nominees. The pic received nods for Best Picture, Best Actor (Emile Hirsch), and Best Director (Penn). It led the field with seven nominations.

Despite the ceremony’s broad moniker, the Critics Choice Awards is not a survey of major movie critics – rather, it is run by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which has an excellent track record of picking Oscar wins. In other words, they aim for the middle. Here are some of the major category nominees, below. You can check out the full list here.
