Just in time for the massive 1980’s revival, Devo is scheduled to play a handful of times over the next few months.  The band is headlining the BMI showcase at SXSW on March 20th and will perform their 1978, Eno produced album, “Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo?’ in full at the London Kentish Town Forum on May 6 as part of ATPs’ Don’t Look Back series.  Two days later they will play a  set at London’s All Tomorrow’s Parties for the Fans Strike Back event.  View more images from Dev-o’s hay-day here.

Season For Charity And Parody

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Blank Archives/Getty Images

It’s been 23 years since a super group of pop stars including Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Tina Turner formed to lay down the self-described historic recording “We Are The World“  as “USA for Africa”.  As well as inspiring Live Aid, Farm Aid and countless other charitable platforms for mega music stars, the bloated project has been parodied on every continent from the beginning.  Some of the better known spoofs have been done by on In Living Color, and Saturday Night Live, but Japanese television has taken a straight emulation to new heights.  This week, PitchforkTV debuts Tim Harrington’s stab at the charity parody genre with a ridiculously catchy song about “giving cash to all the trust fund children”.

Harrington, member of Les Savy Fav and Pitchfork TV “Beardo” host enlisted a crew of indie musicians and friends including Andrew W.K., Fred Armisen (Trenchmouth), Moby, Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem, the New Pornographers’ Carl Newman, Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, The Make Up, Weird War),  Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, actress Amy Carlson (Third Watch/Law & Order), Oliver Ackermann of A Place to Bury Strangers, Gavin McInnes (Street Carnage/ex-VICE), comedian Seth Herzog, plus members of Love as Laughter, Excepter, Cheeseburger, and Panthers to participate in this tongue in cheek critique with high production value and discreet charm.  Watch the video here.

Ice Princess Lady GaGa

Never one to be out dressed, Joanne Stefani Germanotta AKA “Lady GaGa” poses at the Interscope, Geffen, and  A&M Records Official American Music Awards After Party at Boulevard3.  For the last few months the singer has been appearing in this crystalled outfit, most likely designed by cohort Matt Williams.  The frosty theme takes a cue from the cover of her album, The Fame.  If only GaGa’s edgy sense made it’s way from her clothes into her music…

Dapper Moves

Janelle Monae performs on stage at the Sean John 10-Year Anniversary runway show at Macy’s in Lennox Square last week in Atlanta, Georgia.  This girl oozes quirky energy and displays impeccable taste at every turn.  She has been morphing old timey menswear (think Jerry Lee Lewis/tap dance/James Brown) into supremely cute, girlie outfits.  You know her from the video for “Morris Brown,” with Big Boi and Scar.  A unique performer fusing disparate genres, Monae has been releasing work under her own label, The Wondaland Arts Society in conjunction with Bad Boy Records.  Her full length album is due to be released in early 2009.  See Some of Janelle’s best looks here.

Kim Gordon’s New Kool Thing

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth introduces her new clothing line, Mirror/Dash this week.  The maiden piece is a wool jacket inspired by 60’s French chanteuse, Françoise Hardy.  This is not Gordon’s first venture into fashion design as she and Daisy Von Furth were the creative force behind X-Girl in the 1990’s.  Mirror/Dash is a collaboration between Gordon, and friends Melinda Wansbrough and Jeffrey Monterio.  Kim is often seen in the front row at Fashion Week checking out collections by her friend Marc Jacobs.  Sonic Youth played at Marc Jacobs’ Fall show in 2008 but the bands connection to the designer goes back further to 1993 when Jacobs’ grunge collection for Perry Ellis took to the runway (on Chloe Sevigny) in the video for Sugar Cane.  Mirror/Dash will be stocked at Opening Ceremony and can be purchased at the designer’s site.  See Kim and her inspiraton here.
