Fur flies on the runway at the Dennis Basso Fall 2009 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in the Promenade at Bryant Park on February 17, 2009 in New York City. Fur is a polarizing topic, so the front row wasn’t exactly brimming with celebrities, but Star Jones braved the possibility of PETA protesters outside Bryant Park wearing a blond coat.  The key people were there, such as Anna Wintour and fashion editor Adrien Field (below), both clad in the controversial material.  Basso’s collection managed to make pelts look weightless by pairing fur with transparent fabrics.  Bucket hats, belts and vests created modern silhouettes.

Derek Warburton timed his appearance at Fashion Week perfectly with The PITA Peltdown At NY Fashion Week Presented by DerekLovesShopping at Bryant Park.  Warburton handed out I heart PITA t-shirts and pita bread from a converted hot dog cart to curious onlookers.   Where do you stand on the wearing of fur?  Maverick or murder?

Power To The People – Choice Awards

It’s beginning to feel a lot like AWARDS SEASON! People’s Choice Award winners, Kid Rock, Katherine Heigl, Kate Hudson, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Christina Applegate, Dakota Fanning and Reese Witherspoon ham it up for an exclusive portrait by Getty Images’ Michael Caufield.  We were so happy to see a healthy Christina Applegate looking radiant in a jewel encrusted gown and can you believe Dakota Fanning is 15?  Below, winners Reese Witherspoon and Teri Hatcher do an obligatory high-five session with the lucky audience members in the front row. (I see your Christian Louboutin red soles!)  See more shots from the People’s Choice Awards here.

Red Sonja Get It? Got It? Good.

Rose McGowan supported Fifty Dead Men Walking at The Toronto International Film Festival yesterday in two different red dresses.  McGowan always looks fetching, but red suits her well in more ways than one.  McGowan is still set to star in Red Sonja, directed by her one time fiance Robert Rodriguez.  The two were rumored to have split both romantically and professionally after budgeting problems surrounding Rodriquez’s Barbarella remake, but rumors of disharmony have been denied.  Regarding her casting for the role, McGowan has been overly quoted for saying : “I do have a body made for sitting on a veranda with mint juleps and a parasol.  I don’t know why I always have to save the planet.”  Keep up with the red dresses and we won’t forget it.

Toronto International Film Festival: Stripped Down

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Matt Carr/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Today is day seven of The Toronto International Film Festival and the Oscar buzz that traditionally begins in Yorkville has already rung in the Academy’s ears.  The mania around anticipating Oscar success is said to have died down this year, which may make lend a certain degree of purity to the viewing experience.  Regardless of a perceived downgrade in hype, the festival is teeming with celebrities, and a few of them stopped by the Getty Images Studio for a portrait.  See our favorites here.

Hyped films include The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke and Evan Rachel-Wood, Rachel Getting Married  by Jonathan Demme starring Anne Hathaway, The Secret Life of Bees with Dakota Fanning (so grown up!) and The Duchess starring Kiera Knightly.

One documentary in the schedule, Paris, Not France, caused a little bit of cheap commotion when Paris Hilton’s people pressured the festival into reducing the number of screenings of the film.   Adria Petty (daughter of Tom Petty) made the low budget film chronicling the life and times of Paris Hilton in 2006 and while the commotion surrounding the screening indicated that there is unflattering dirt to be dished, it may have simply been a publicity maneuver.

Denim Watch: Day 10

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Katie Holmes debuted a new pair of jeans on her routine walk to rehearsals for All My Sons on Saturday. This pair of late 70’s inspired, high-waisted jeans look elegant on Katie’s frame (20 x better than last weeks pair). The high-waisted backlash to the ultra low rise cuts of the last few years has been met with mixed reviews, some claiming that the higher waist flattens one’s derriere and reminds most people under 40 of their moms. Others argue that the high waist appears to elongate one’s legs. Hilary Duff, Mischa Barton, Kiera Knightly are amongst those who have embraced the trend. Katie has found a pair that fits well, and flatters. What is your call on high-waisted jeans? Check out this lightbox of high-waisted styles, past and present.

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona crew (and Soon-Yi Previn) relaxed at the movie’s premiere after-party at Los Angeles’ W Hotel last night.  Allen’s latest film, set in Spain revolves around an odd love triangle hinged on Javier Bardem’s character.  Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz are the objects of his obsession, and eventually all the pieces fall into place as they find a happy medium in bed (which will undoubtedly satisfy fans of both actresses).  Opens August 15th!

Hot Burnout

James Franco arrived at The Ed Sullivan Theater for the taping of The Late show, with David Letterman yesterday looking sharp in a black suit and summery checked shirt. Franco’s real life sophisticated sheen is in stark contrast to the ultra laid back aesthetic of his character, Saul Silver in Pineapple Express. Many became familiar with Franco in his role of the adorable burnout, Daniel Desario in Freaks and Geeks. Let’s hope that Franco’s reunion with Judd Apatow & Co. results in such a memorable project. Are you going to see Pineapple Express on August 8th?
