Chloe Sevigny bared her legs and just a bit more  at the Chloe Los Angeles Boutique Opening Celebration held at Milk Studios on April 23, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.  We talked about elongating legs with fleshy shoes a while back and this long blazer/short bottom combo has the same effect. Sevigny and Chloe fan, Kate Bosworth have stepped out in this look by the French fashion house a few times over the past year with different accessories.  The last time we saw these proportions on a large scale was in the early 1990’s.  Micheal Kors shows his 1990 collection of short shots and slouchy jackets in the photo at bottom.  Thankfully fashion’s evolution has improved on this aesthetic. See what happened  Sevigny did a 180 here.

Where Were They Then? Christopher Walken

Actor Christopher Walken attends the Vanity Fair party for the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival at the State Supreme Courthouse on April 21, 2009 in New York City.

The intriguing actor wasn’t always known as Christopher.  He was born, Ronald Walker and acted as a child alongside his brothers on television.  He is pictured at bottom in 1955 as “Ronnie Walken”  in clown makeup.  A native to Queens, New York he studied dance and theater locally.  He changed his name officially to Christopher in 1964 because a friend thought it suited him better than Ronald (he is pictured in that year below, right).  His unique, halting delivery is often imitated and is described by a crew member from King of New York as a happy side effect to struggling  with  lines.  He has been married to casting director, Georgianne Walken for 40 years.  Check out Walken through the years here.

Comediennes are some of the zaniest dressers and Elaine Stritch can be counted amongst them.  She has a definite personal style that settled into its sweet spot sometime in the mid 1960’s.  She ran with the modish androgyny that borrows hats and neckties from the man’s side of the closet.  Staying firmly with neutrals with an occasional pop of color, Stritch works whites in the warmer months and shades of black in the cooler ones.  Her accessorizing is key with a pin here, pearls there and always those GLASSES! I can only hope that I can look this sharp in my 80’s.  Look at more Stritch style here.

It’s officially spring, if you hadn’t noticed, and while the eastern seaboard is teased by the occasional warm day it hasn’t really been temperate enough to wear something that screams spring.  Rather than braving the lambish half of March  in a fuchsia miniskirt, how about wearing a bit of floral?  You needn’t go bare legged.  Florals have been popular over the past few springs with the return to ladylike decorum on the runways and on the streets they will most likely continue to fill shop windows and perhaps your closet if you don’t think they are sickeningly sweet.  Last September we saw catwalks flooded with floral chiffons in anticipation for this fertile season.  Be inspired by florals in fashion through the ages here.

Director Roger Vadim famously plucked 15 year old Brigitte Bardot from obscurity, gave her a blond-over and launched her into the outer orbits of fame as one of the original sex kittens. In Vadim’s 1986 memoir; Bardot,Deneuve, Fonda, my life with the three most beautiful women in the world , he describes applying his effective aesthetic to all three of these women with whom he was romantically involved, catalyzing their careers.  In the next few installments of “Before They Were Blond” we will take a look at a range of women who reinvented themselves with peroxide.  For a roundup of some more notable bleachers click here.

Ombre, a dip-dye technique applied to fabric to graduate the color from light to dark has emerged as a runway trend. Thandie Newton and Tilda Swinton both wore ombre dresses with brightly multi-colored rainbow effect. Dita Von Teese and Salma Hayek wore ombre as a single color gradient. Which way do you prefer ombre used? Click here to see more.

Whitley Kros – Cheap & Chic

Monday, March 16th, 2009

A general view is seen at the Fall 2009 presentation of Whitley Kros at Miauhaus on March 15, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.  Actress and fashion follower Erika Christensen played host to the 2009 collection presentation for Whitley Kros, the design team we wrote about a few seasons ago.  In addition to playfully blurring the line between art installation and fashion presentation, the show must have been pretty cost-effective.  One model, Ceren Alkac, was on hand but the majority of the carefree, eclectic pieces were hung alone on while walls besides their inspirational vignettes.   Left brainers , including musicians Chan Marshall and  Devendra Banhart were in attendance along with Ann Archer and brother of the designer, Giovanni Ribisi.  Always looking outside convention, it is no surprise that Whitley Kros has found a refreshing method to display their work, this time with the embrace of a truly DIY aesthetic.  See more here.
