TORONTO, ON – SEPTEMBER 15:  Director, actress Drew Barrymore attends the “Whip It” press conference during the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival held at Sutton Place Hotel on September 15, 2009 in Toronto, Canada.   Barrymore is no stranger to the allure of the 1980s and here she rehashes the decades high and low points all at once.  Bleachy jean jacket, teal stockings, belted long dress… The most striking element of Drews’ look are her inky paintbrush tips, calling to mind Debbie Harry and Terri Nunn’s 80’s era black on blonde looks.  This is a very safe way to show rebellion as it can be lopped off  at a moments notice.  It can be pulled back to look conservative but it more or less resembles a blonde bob.  Pretty clever!  What do you think of Drews new-wave underside?

Chinese actress Tan Zhuo poses during the photocall of the movie Chun Feng Chen Zui De Ye Wan (Spring Fever) directed by Chinese Lou Ye in competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2009. Defying the authorities, controversial Chinese director Lou Ye is offering a movie on love and homosexuality at the Cannes film festival this week that was shot on the quiet in east China despite a state work ban.

“Pudding Bowl”, “Purdey”, “Mushroom top” or “China Doll”, whatever you call it, the haircut you loved to hate after the 70’s were finished might be back, judging by its appearance on both Bae Doo-Na and Tan Zhuo at Cannes.  Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Agyness Deyn and Rinko Kikuchi were early proliferaters of this trend.  The early 1970s were a big time for this banged, rounded bob, with such fans as Brigitte Bardot, Mia Farrow and Joanna Lumley.  Some mainstream celebrities have approached this bubble bob style in a less committed fashion, such as Heidi Klum, Katie Holmes and Paris Hilton.  Yves Saint Laurents’ Fall/Winter 2008/2009 collection celebrated the modish crop with black bowl wigs throughout.  Take a look at more bowl styles here.  Is this an isolated outbreak or can we expect to see more purdeys ahead?

Rapunzel’s Cousin

Drew Barrymore is seen on the streets of Manhattan on April 13, 2009 in New York City.   Drew’s nest of braids is not only sophisticated and whimsical, but it is also very practical in that it hides root growth.  This tweaked French braid has been popping up everywhere whether it has been limited to the crown or involves the whole head.  It can disguise both hair color transitions and awkward grow-out stages.  The long fringes that were hot a few months ago might feel a little heavy now.  What better way to sweep them away than with a braid? See more braid inspiration here.

Lindsay: Fire’s On

It appears that Lindsay has not forgotten part of what made her so lovable in the first place after-all;  Freckles and ginger hair!  We can talk innocence later.  She was seen on the street in Beverly Hills yesterday with freshly auburn-ed locks after a visit earlier this year from the peroxide fairy who highlighted her tips.  We’re so happy to see she her embracing her true haircolor again.  Perhaps she realizes what a rare specimen she is.  Only 1 or 2% of the world’s population can boast having naturally red hair.  What do you think?  Embrace nature or dye away?  See more of Lohan’s blaze here.  Check out her eharmony spot here.

Before They Were Blond: Debbie Harry

Deborah Harry is almost inseparable from the idea of blond, having fronted the band, Blondie throughout the mid 1970s to the early 1980s.   It is shocking to see her as anything but blond, but she has her roots in a rather average light brown.  She was a cocktail bunny at New York’s Playboy club in the early 70’s  as a brunette and played in the New Jersey based folk-rock band, The Wind in the Willows (pictured on left).  It was only after her hair was dyed  it’s signature platinum blond that she enjoyed widespread success as “Blondie”.

Before They Were Blond: The Vadim Trio

Director Roger Vadim famously plucked 15 year old Brigitte Bardot from obscurity, gave her a blond-over and launched her into the outer orbits of fame as one of the original sex kittens. In Vadim’s 1986 memoir; Bardot,Deneuve, Fonda, my life with the three most beautiful women in the world , he describes applying his effective aesthetic to all three of these women with whom he was romantically involved, catalyzing their careers.  In the next few installments of “Before They Were Blond” we will take a look at a range of women who reinvented themselves with peroxide.  For a roundup of some more notable bleachers click here.
