Elizabeth Olsen attends the Broadway opening night after party for “Impressionism” at Sardis on March 24, 2009 in New York City. Baring a remarkable resemblance to her older, lime-lit sisters, Lizzie shares the Olsen twins’ preference for bohemian threads.  In fact she and her brother James are name-checked with Elizabeth and James, the fashion line by Mary-Kate and Ashley. Last night we are pretty sure Lizzie was wearing the long, sheer camel colored dress that Mary-Kate belted in 2007 for the presentation of Calvin Klein’s new collection at P3, Marylebone Road in London, England.  Who do you think did the dress justice?

Deborah Harry is almost inseparable from the idea of blond, having fronted the band, Blondie throughout the mid 1970s to the early 1980s.   It is shocking to see her as anything but blond, but she has her roots in a rather average light brown.  She was a cocktail bunny at New York’s Playboy club in the early 70’s  as a brunette and played in the New Jersey based folk-rock band, The Wind in the Willows (pictured on left).  It was only after her hair was dyed  it’s signature platinum blond that she enjoyed widespread success as “Blondie”.

Director Roger Vadim famously plucked 15 year old Brigitte Bardot from obscurity, gave her a blond-over and launched her into the outer orbits of fame as one of the original sex kittens. In Vadim’s 1986 memoir; Bardot,Deneuve, Fonda, my life with the three most beautiful women in the world , he describes applying his effective aesthetic to all three of these women with whom he was romantically involved, catalyzing their careers.  In the next few installments of “Before They Were Blond” we will take a look at a range of women who reinvented themselves with peroxide.  For a roundup of some more notable bleachers click here.

Actress Blythe Danner attends the opening night of “Distracted” at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Laura Pels Theatre on March 4, 2009 in New York City.  Blythe, I don’t know what you’re doing, but you have never looked so vivacious!  Gwyneth Paltrow has undoubtedly inherited some resilient genes from her mother.  At age 66, Danner has enjoyed a career spanning at least forty years from the stage to the silver screen and television.  She is pictured below at ages 54 (left) and 35 (right).

Actress Debra Messing attends the Robert Vetica “Good to Great Hair” book launch hosted by Salma Hayak at Beso on February 26, 2009 in Hollywood, California. The redhead is dressed from head to toe in a buttery auburn leather pinafore dress by Bottega Veneta and matching strappy heels. The colors are flattering, the chunky gold accessories are perfect, but what do you think of the dress?  Backseat beautiful or not sofa-bulous?

Why Are There So Many Pretty Women Around?

“Why are there so many pretty women around?” A simple question posed by a young Frenchman to his friends after doing a double-take on Broadway has a few answers.   “This is Manhattan” could satisfy on most days but he answered himself a few moments later with; “It’s Fashion Week”.  The New York City beauty quotient is raised by a few degrees when Fashion Week comes to town, not only with an influx of traveling models but with journalists, stylists and industry divas.

The main event was taking place 40 or so blocks uptown in Bryant Park, where Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall ‘09 was getting started.  Charlotte Ronson resurrected grunge (again) and our favorite celebrities donned scarlet for heart health awareness at the “Heart Truth Red Dress Collection” Fall 2009 fashion show. (Top) Models walk the runway at the Yigal Azrouel Womenswear Fall 2009 fashion show at The Promenade while Jennie Garth is prepped for a walk down the runway (middle).  Amanda Bynes almost bares it all for Heart Truth Red Dress Collection (below).

We recently noted Kiera Knightly’s creative work with a black ribbon bow at the Toronto International Film Festival in late 2008, but just last night the look was spotted again with a completely different effect.  The always darling Drew Barrymore was seen at Los Angeles Lakers vs Oklahoma City Thunder game at the Staples Center on February 10, 2009 in Los Angeles (with a boy) pairing a black ribbon bow with a striped shirt and sleek black boots for a nod to mod.
