Patti Smith: New album has us nostalgic for vintage images

June 8, 2012 | By Holly Cara Price | Archive, Entertainment, Legends, Music

Patti Smith released her 11th studio album, Banga, this week, so it seems a perfect time for us to revisit some amazing photographs of this gifted, singular artist, going back all the way to the early ’70′s, not long after she first moved to New York City.

David Gahr photographed Smith many times, and we’re thrilled to feature a collection of his images on our site. Here is one of my favorites: an earlier and less well-known photo of Patti.

Many famed music photographers such as Stephanie Chernikowski, Leee Black Childers, Richard E. Aaron, David Redfern, Michael Putland, Ebet Roberts and others have photographed Smith over the years, and our Archival Research Department in London put together a wonderful selection… take a look!
