New signing stars Marilyn Monroe, a symbol of so much
Coming up on the 50th anniversary of the Hollywood icon’s death, Marilyn Monroe seems to be everywhere these days — whether looking down from the Cannes film festival’s official posters, or in images (and dresses) on display at our own Getty Images Gallery.
Fame and danger, hope and ambition, a simpler time, a complicated life … Marilyn Monroe symbolizes many things to many people (remember those inspirational Nike ads from the 90s?). But what about the people who knew her? How did they see the star, or, more importantly, the person?
Enter photographer Lawrence Schiller, who’s interactions with the star became the basis for his book, “Marilyn & Me,” launching this week at Cannes. We’re thrilled to be licensing his work through Getty Images, and have a beautiful collection of photos that show the star as both boldly beautiful and beautifully vulnerable.
Take a look … and let us know, what does Marilyn Monroe symbolize for you?
