Royal sports: Charles, Harry bring it on; Kate’s jeans win style points
It seems appropriate that with the London 2012 Olympics looming imminently, the Royals should take this opportunity to spend much of March warming up with some sporting activities of their own.
Recently, I photographed the Duchess of Cambridge training with the British Olympic Hockey team in a pair of skin tight coral jeans – Something that was always going to garner some serious media attention.
Her nerves were evident as she arrived — despite playing while at school, it has been a while since she picked up a hockey stick and the thought of shooting for goal was obviously pretty daunting for the young Duchess. However, after some friendly banter with the ladies team, it seemed her nerves evaporated. As she shot for goal I had to keep one eye over the top of my camera to avoid being hit!
Also, during his Diamond Jubilee tour, Prince Harry triumphed against the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, in Jamaica. His jubilation was evident, but much was made of the fact that it wasn’t an entirely fair race as Harry cheekily sprinted off when Usain wasn’t looking.
I am currently with the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles in Sweden who are visting Norway, Sweden and Demark as part of their own Diamond Jubilee Spring Tour. Keen not to be outdone by the younger (and maybe slightly more agile!) members of the Royal family Prince Charles decided to partake in some ball games of his own during a visit to the Fryshuset Youth Centre in Stockholm.
The seasoned Royal laughed as he was offered a basketball by one of the members of the youth team and whilst we didn’t get a royal slamdunk, the Prince was in hysterics as he tossed the ball in the vague direction of the net. After three attempts he still hadn’t scored, and he decided it was time to hand the ball over to the Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt who, as a former basketball player himself, scored on the first try!
