From his home in Toronto, Brett Lamb is quietly creating mayhem and magic while he sits, like a designer possessed, surrounded by his trusty Wacom tablet and a hard-worked PC.
His work covers everything from film posters to animation and the illustrations for a fun fair – you’ll even find some of his imagery in our new iStock Vectors collection.
Here’s what he has to say about a life of creating, illustrating and writing on his shoes.
“It’s all about finding a balance between creating images that’ll be useful as stock and sillier images for fun. I’m usually just trying to make myself laugh with the fun stuff; my humour’s inspired by Canadian comedy like Kids in the Hall and SCTV.
When I’m working up my ideas I use my 12 x 12, 8-year-old Wacom tablet and Illustrator CS3 on a PC (a Mac never made sense for me in the past ’cause I like videogames too much). I used to sketch on paper and scan the roughs, but I’ve been completely on the computer for almost a decade.
My drawing mostly happens between midnight and four in the morning – clients never phone at those hours so I can focus uninterrupted. Of course, most ideas come during the day when I’m doing other things, so I scribble notes on any scrap of paper that’s lying around (or if there’s no paper, my arm, my clothes or my shoes).
Earlier this year one of my pictures featured in an episode of How I Met Your Mother. And one of my Toronto skyline vectors is on the big signs for Pinewood Studios’ Toronto location. It’s a treat to see my work out there.
And things seem to have come full circle. As a kid I liked to draw and make Super 8 movies … so I’m pretty much doing what I’ve always done.”

Great info!
