A Sneak Peek of the Olympic Flame
It has been a busy few pre-game days; I got a sneak peek of the Olympic flame at Vancouver Olympic Committee headquarters, watched the last leg of the torch relay and as a volunteer and received a free ticket to the Opening Ceremony Rehearsal. Pretty amazing show, although we were sworn to secrecy on content of the show, upon pain of death (or at very least losing your volunteer credentials!), although it was pretty obvious who would be the stars of the show (I mean, Bryan Adams clearly will turn up at anything vaguely Canadian).
The stars, including KD Lang, Sarah McLachlan and Nelly Furtado were out in full force and full voice at the rehearsal, although the real athletes were not, instead there were stand-ins for the parade of athletes. My favorite thing about the ceremony? The LOUD reception from the crowd for the team of fake Canadian athletes. These folk have some serious national pride. They even love their fake athletes more than we love our fake athletes. My second favorite thing about the ceremony? Overheard nearby “it’s amazing what you can achieve with some bed sheets and a projector.”
I had to work during the real opening ceremony two days later, but whilst everyone else was watching that, I got an insider tip-off that there was a secret external cauldron that was going to be lit by Canada’s favorite son, Wayne Gretzky. So I snuck over to the Main Press Center and watched the Olympic cauldron being lit to a backdrop of fireworks. It has finally begun!
