Actress Renee Zellweger visited the “Late Show with David Letterman” at the Ed Sullivan Theater on January 29, 2009 in New York City wearing a one shouldered body-con red dress even Betty Boop would envy.  Her hair was significantly more tamed (and more flattering) than it had at the Golden Globes.  I am sure we will be seeing quite a bit of red in the next two weeks as Valentine’s day is upon us.  Zellweger does red right by keeping it sleek, short and well matched with Louboutin stilettos.

Wedding wear models attended the Franck Sorbier fashion show during Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2009 on January 28.  Maybe instead of buying that teddy bear with satin boxers for your sweetheart this year, you can take them on a spontaneous walk down the aisle on Febuary 14th.

Teal It Like It Is

In January 2009 alone, the color teal has been splashed across the runways at Valentino and Strenesse to red carpets worldwide.   Evan Rachel Wood wore a very deep shade of the watery hue at the SAG Awards this weekend. Elisha Cuthbert, Alyson Hannigan, Mary-Louise Parker and model Lena Gercke also embraced the flattering color in recent weeks.

Teal is described by Glidden as a color that indicates stability and resistance to change.  If you like the color, you are optimistic and trusting, you have a high degree of faith and hope.  Does it make sense that we are seeing it everywhere in uncertain times?  Absolutely.   People who lived through the 1980’s are reluctant to embrace the color that was omnipresent two decades ago, but today’s teal is deeper and highly textured.

Pantone picked Mimosa as the color of 2009 and it flooded red carpets and runways a year before that, so is it safe to bet that this calming shade will be the color of 2010?  It’s a little early to make predictions but if the rest of the year is anything like the past month, it’s worth gambling on.  Get the blue/greens here.

Mullet Rebellion

Jane Fonda holds up a sign during a performance of the anti-war road show ‘F.T.A. (Free the Army),’ New York, New York, 1971. Declaring herself a pusher of causes, her mullet-like hairstyle was in contrast to her former flowing locks. In the years since other young actresses have adopted similar hairstyles to signify their want to be taken seriously.

Actress Scarlett Johansson, at the world premiere of “The Italian Job” in May 2003, showed off a proper mullet she would later soften for the upcoming release of “Lost in Translation”. Actress Taylor Momsen, seen on the set of the TV show “Gossip Girls” on location on the upper eastside, sports a similar hairdo. Momsen plays a teen from the far flung borough of Brooklyn on the show.

One can only hope when Miley Cyrus wishes to shed her tween star status to be taken seriously as an actress she adopts the business in front, party in the back hair-do that her father, Billy Ray Cyrus made so famous.

What Year Is It In Barrymoreland?

Drew Barrymore attends the "He's Just Not That Into You" press c

Drew Barrymore has always leaned towards a retro aesthetic,  whether she is channeling Marilyn Monroe at this years Golden Globes or Mae West at 1995’s MTV Video Music Awards she has been evoking different decades with her hair and makeup choices since the beginning.  Right now she seems fully committed to a mid 1960’s look for her “He’s Just Not That Into You” Press Conference on January 24th.   I am going to throw the year 1966 out there for the year Barrymore is evoking with her pale lips, lined eyes and pale, flipped hair; before hippie hit but after fashion loosened up a bit.  Do you think it suits her or should she step back into the time machine and travel back to 2009?  See more of Barrymore’s retro looks here and possible inspiration from 1966.
