Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Dunks

Nike got together with Liberty of London, and created a floral Nike Dunk! The unlikely coupling spawned a baby that is so ugly that it could be in fact be… cute. The chunky, masculine silhouette is at odds with it’s feminine treatment just as Nike’s trend conscious, sporty aesthetic is in opposition to Liberty of London’s deep seated tradition. The launch of this limited edition shoe was celebrated at Opening Ceremony last week in Los Angeles and became available this weekend at the two retail locations. The flowery dunks have already been spotted on Mischa Barton. Liberty Prints are timeless, but make a splash every few years. The preppy innocence of the 1980s continues to be turned on it’s side as Liberty prints are resurrected with a twinge of irony. Roberto Cavalli incorporated Liberty textiles into his pieces this spring and Luella Bartley covered runways with Liberty-esque florals in September. The sun-dress (upper right) designed by Mary Quant in 1972 would not look out of place on the racks this spring. As for the Nikes, do flowers do the Dunks justice?
