I can’t believe that she was assassinated by a 15-year-old! What a shock! This is a crazy part of the world, and we are going to have to reassess our handling of such situations. I have spoken with several people from the middle east, and they all say that she was assassinated because it would be a major blow to the Americans. What are we doing wrong?

John Moore,
I was impressed with the slide show you published on the NYTimes. I was in Pakistan during the time that Benazir was assassinated; however I was in Lahore away from much of the violence. From what I have heard and read previously, her assassination was inevitable and expected; although that she was actually assassinated still brought a wave of shock over the country.
I was wondering what brought you to Pakistan and specifically the rally? Obviously, even though you were there you came out of the situation alright. But it is quite something that you were there and able to photograph the incident and its aftermath.
Many people were concerned about me, even though I was not near the action. Her assassination quieted our days rather than create excitement, as we stayed home to watched the television as the events and conspiracy theories unfolded. Additionally, many events were canceled or rescheduled such as the New Year's party.
It was quite something to in Pakistan during this time and it is unfortunate that events played out as they did. I hope the situation will calm down for the Pakistanis. It is also unfortunate that Pakistan is constantly protrayed negatively in the media. The people I encountered were very friendly and have nothing to do with terrorism. My visit to the country was a positive experience and I wish that more Americans and other outsiders could better understand Pakistan.

Horrific. And in fact it was one of the things I was wondering about. How you survived or what you went through. Because I saw your photos from before the blast (you were so close) and after the blast.
