Hurry Up and Wait

Streeter and me on the field before the Ceremony began. Streeter in his garage-man suit and Harry had to wear all black.

“20 minutes” – that is how long transportation said we had to wait for the bus to the Opening Ceremony at Maracana Stadium. Sounds reasonable, yes? It’s just that we heard that three “20 minutes” ago and in my experience, in any other country, that means an hour. But this is Rio and as we are discovering, that’s almost on time. Live and learn. A quick bite and a bit of traffic, we arrive 2 hours later than planned.

Of course, this doesn’t faze our media contact, a local Brazillian we call JP who bends over backward to help Streeter set up a remote for the fireworks. Before we know it, we are back on schedule, in the bowel of the stadium – right where JP had planned all along…to be in position for a 2 hour wait.

Did I mention that the photos from the night were pretty good?

I captured this picture while roaming around on the in-field…just after the cauldron was lit by former Brazilian track and field medalist Joaquim Cruz.

More fun later…

Just wanted to leave a quick note to say I enjoy reading this blog and I wish you guys would post more often! There are a ton of photoblogs out there, but all they do is show pictures of various objects, sports, locations, etc. I enjoy reading about the behind-the-scenes aspect of photography (getting directions to venues, what shooting settings you chose and why, any surprises you experienced during the event).

I hope you’ll consider posting more often – I really do enjoy reading it!

Feel free to come over to my blog (it’s in the website field I provided above) for an example of the behind-the-scenes aspect I’m referring to (yes that’s shameless self-promotion).

I really like last posts that were made on this blog, obiously including this post.
Streeter with the garage-man suit is quite funny. haha.

I really like the picture of the cauldron.
I hope to read “more fun” soon. :-)

To tell the truth I would like to read something of technical from the editor Rebecca. For example about how pictures are sent to her (wireless or not?), about how many pictures she receives each day and what she usually makes to make pictures better (crop, levels, and what more?).

    Thank you for everything!

Hi Marco! Sorry for my delayed response…it has been very busy here and a long 3 weeks! Since the venues have been so spread out, I have only been able to edit LIVE at the Aquatic Park during the swimming events and the Joao Havelange Stadium for the Athletics. While there, I would receive the cards from the photographer/s who have been assigned to that event by a photo support person (runner) or sometimes I would walk out to the pool deck or down to the field myself to collect the disks. We are here on a much smaller scale then an Olympic Games where we would spool images directly from the shooter on the field of play. I have kept a count throughout the 17 days of these Games and they have shot approximately 30,000 images, and we have posted nearly 1500 images LIVE with more to follow. When I edit, I chose the best pictures and make minor adjustments if needed. We have a very talented group of guys (4) shooting this event so there is not much I need to do! When I am not editing live, I have been looking after the schedule and doing a second edit for our website. Thank you for your interest. We will post our last entries in the next few days! Stay tuned! -Rebecca
